The Center for Heirs’ Property is currently seeking a staff attorney.

Under the supervision of the Director of Legal Services, this position performs such duties as conducting client intakes and providing consultations and direct legal representation on legal matters pertaining to heirs’ property, tenancy in common rights, probate estate administration, intestate inheritance, chain of title issues, tax sales, quiet title actions, land partition matters, and the drafting of Wills and Advanced Directives. The position also requires full participation in community outreach efforts and events within the Center’s service area which will include evening and weekend work. Desired Experience, Education, Skills, and Knowledge

Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school with at least two (2) full years’ of experience that includes the direct practice of law and representation of clients, and the supervision of, or effectively working with, support staff; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience

Upon successful completion of 12 months employees are eligible for 403(B) retirement plan with org contribution (without requirement for match by employee).10 paid holidays each year. Full-time employees (years 1 – 4) can accrue up to 10 days annual leave per year. Paid accrued sick leave is also available.

Staff Attorney

Job Description
Under the direction of the South Carolina Victim Assistance Network’s Legal Assistance for Victims program, the Reaching Rural project will address the substantial need for crime victims’ rights attorneys in many of the state’s rural counties with the goal of expanding legal access and services to crime victims in the targeted area of Beaufort County and the federally designated Promise Zone of South Carolina (Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties). Our objective is to ensure that victims of crime in these underserved areas are represented by excellent counsel familiar with victims and victims’ rights enforcement. Innovative uses of technology and cross program collaborations will enable Reaching Rural to increase the quantity and scope of holistic legal services to the area by connecting clients with SCVAN attorneys and pro bono and low bono attorneys statewide. Rural clients will be linked through remote assistance technology, including real time videoconference sessions, and physical roaming legal clinics organized at locations throughout the area.

STAFF ATTORNEY (1.0 FTE)

The Staff Attorney will be a full-time, salaried employee who works 37.5 hours per week and devotes 100% of his/her time to this Project. This attorney will report directly to the Reaching Rural Senior Staff Attorney. This position will assist with the creation and execution of roaming legal clinics and outreach efforts in Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, & Jasper counties. The Staff Attorney will also assist in the coordination a pro bono and contract (low bono) attorney program. In addition, the LAV Staff Attorney will provide direct, holistic wraparound legal services to all crime victims including those victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, harassment, stalking, and human trafficking. The Staff Attorney will represent victims in order of protection/restraining order hearings, family law, housing, employment, Title IX education issues (higher and lower education), victims’ rights, and other related civil legal matters.

Key Duties:

  • Maintain a direct services caseload
  • Appear in court on behalf of clients; draft and file pleadings, motions and orders; conduct legal research and draft legal opinions; and handle appeals when necessary
  • Provide technical assistance to South Carolina victim service providers and attorneys
  • Attend local, statewide, and national trainings relating to legal services for victims of crime
  • Assist in coordination of the program’s private bar involvement initiative

Requirements/ Qualifications:

  • Licensed in SC
