Under the direction of the South Carolina Victim Assistance Network’s Legal Assistance for Victims program, the Reaching Rural project will address the substantial need for crime victims’ rights attorneys in many of the state’s rural counties with the goal of expanding legal access and services to crime victims in the targeted area of Beaufort County and the federally designated Promise Zone of South Carolina (Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties). Our objective is to ensure that victims of crime in these underserved areas are represented by excellent counsel familiar with victims and victims’ rights enforcement. Innovative uses of technology and cross program collaborations will enable Reaching Rural to increase the quantity and scope of holistic legal services to the area by connecting clients with SCVAN attorneys and pro bono and low bono attorneys statewide. Rural clients will be linked through remote assistance technology, including real time videoconference sessions, and physical roaming legal clinics organized at locations throughout the area.
STAFF ATTORNEY (1.0 FTE)
The Staff Attorney will be a full-time, salaried employee who works 37.5 hours per week and devotes 100% of his/her time to this Project.
